Solanum tuberosum, commonly known as the potato, is a starchy tuberous crop from the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Native to the Americas, it is one of the world's most important food crops. Potatoes are grown for their edible tubers, which are rich in carbohydrates, vitamins (especially vitamin C and B6), and minerals like potassium. They are versatile in cooking, used in dishes ranging from mashed potatoes to fries. The plant has green leaves and produces small flowers, usually white or purple. Potatoes require cool climates and well-drained soil for optimal growth.
