Juglans nigra, commonly known as black walnut, is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It is valued for its high-quality dark wood and edible nuts. The tree can grow up to 30–40 meters tall and has pinnately compound leaves. Black walnut produces a chemical called juglone, which inhibits the growth of certain nearby plants. The nuts are encased in a thick, hard shell and are used in cooking and baking. The wood is prized for furniture and veneer.
