The Aesculus hippocastanum, commonly known as the horse chestnut, is a deciduous tree native to the Balkans. It is known for its large, palmate leaves and showy white flowers with red or yellow spots. The tree produces spiny green fruits containing shiny brown seeds called conkers. It is often planted as an ornamental tree but has limited commercial use. The seeds are toxic if ingested raw.
