Sambucus nigra, commonly known as elder or black elderberry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to Europe. It produces clusters of small white flowers in spring and dark purple-black berries in late summer. The berries are used in jams, syrups, and traditional medicine for immune support. The plant prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Caution: raw berries and other parts may be toxic if consumed improperly.
