Corylus avellana, commonly known as the common hazel or European hazel, is a deciduous shrub native to Europe and Western Asia. It produces edible nuts called hazelnuts, which are widely used in cooking and confectionery. The plant has rounded leaves with serrated edges and yellow catkins in late winter. It thrives in well-drained soil and prefers sunny to partially shaded locations. Often grown for its nuts and ornamental value, it also supports wildlife.
