Penstemon barbatus, commonly known as Beardlip Penstemon or Scarlet Bugler, is a perennial flowering plant native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It features tall spikes of tubular, bright red or scarlet flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The plant thrives in well-drained soils and full sun, making it ideal for xeriscaping and rock gardens. It blooms from late spring to early summer and is drought-tolerant once established. The foliage is lance-shaped and green, forming a basal rosette. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9.
