Mespilus germanica, commonly known as the medlar, is a small deciduous tree or shrub in the Rosaceae family. It produces edible fruit that is eaten when bletted (softened by frost or storage). Native to Southwest Asia and Southeast Europe, it has been cultivated since ancient times. The fruit is brown, apple-like, and rich in tannins. The tree has white flowers and grows up to 8 meters tall. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun.
