Ilex crenata, commonly known as Japanese holly or box-leaved holly, is an evergreen shrub native to East Asia. It features small, glossy, dark green leaves resembling boxwood, with a dense, compact growth habit. It produces tiny white flowers in spring and black berries in fall. Popular in landscaping for hedges and topiary, it thrives in well-drained soil and partial to full sun. Hardy in USDA zones 5-8, it is resistant to deer and tolerates pruning well.
